Most homeowners only care about the green side of their lawns, but its what’s just underneath that green that makes all the difference in a beautiful, healthy lawn. Making that layer of soil known as the top soil as healthy as possible is the best way of insuring that the green side of your lawn looks great.
Short of peeling back a lawn and starting over, we’re limited to few options. One is to top dress a lawn and the other is to aerate a lawn, and the best is to do both.
Top dressing a lawn is rather simple: spread finely processed organic matter across the surface. This thin layer or organic matter will quickly work its way into the thatch layer and speeds up the decomposition process of that layer. This process can be improved by aerating the lawn at the same time.
Aeration is really a quite simple process. Small cores of top soil are pulled from the lawn and deposited on top of the grass. These plugs not only leave a space that will soon fill in, but it also deposits a small amount of top soil and soil microbes on the surface. These combine to help break down thatch (thatch is a thick knotted mass of material that may block water and nutrients from reaching turf grass roots.
