April showers bring May flowers. Or really tall grass! Is your lawn growing rapidly overnight? A bit of sun and a ton of rain is what lawns thrive on. Caring for your lawn in the spring differs slightly than other seasons. Cool season grasses grow best in the spring and the fall.
Your lawn needs to be mowed. And mowed again. Attempt to mow your lawn more than once a week. During this time of year, many lawns are ready for their next mow within 3 – 4 days. Properly fertilized lawns need to be mowed twice a week following the “1/3 rule”. No more than 1/3 of the grass blade should be removed in a single mowing.
In order to maximize growth, the recommended mowing height for spring grass is around 3″ – 4″ and no more than 1″ of the grass blade should be removed during mowing. Your lawn mower should have it’s annual tune up as well.
Consider replacing your regular lawn mower blades with a mulching mower blade. Mulching blades lift the lawn clippings up into the path of the blade for re-cutting to help the clippings disappear into the yard rather than blowing them out from under the mower deck.
