Now is the best time to seed your lawn. Seeding now will help your lawn recover nicely from Summer damage. Seeding in the Fall is better and more effective than seeding in the Spring. For best results, seed your lawn between mid-August & the end of September. Seeding is somewhat of an art and a science. The correct seed blend needs to be used as well as the proper approach.
Choose a quality seed mixture from a reputable supplier. Most Northeast Ohio lawns are a mixture of Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass. Choose a blend that contains at least 50% Kentucky Bluegrass (for full sun and partial shade). Every seed container is required to have a seed blend label. Do not buy a blend that has annual seed or weed seed in it. This will not produce good results. Brookside Lawn Service has 10lb. and 50 lb. bags available. Be sure to prepare your lawn first before you seed.
Preparing To Seed:
- Remove any unwanted grass from the yard – Treat it with a product containing Glyphosate
- For best results do this while the grass is green and actively growing
- Warning: This will kill everything it touches
- Wait 7 – 10 days before you prepare the seed bed
Prepare A Seed Bed:
- Loosen the soil – This allows the bed to hold more moisture
- Rake in small areas – The soil should be raked smooth when finished
- Next rake the seed in over the smooth soil
- Place straw or Penn Mulch on top of the seeded area
After Seed Care:
- Keep the area moist daily – The seed is more likely to come up quick and even
- Water less after 3 weeks
- Note: It is common for some weeds to appear with new grass – DO NOT use weed controls at this point
- After your new lawn has been mowed 4x you may use weed control
